Rustle— rustle—

The Empire, Hermes Province. The threshold of winter, when snowflakes rarely seen in the south came drifting quietly down.

Rustle— rustle—

Ezell Runsellot stepped into that unfamiliar scene. As a High-tier Wizard of the Sentio Magic Tower, she had been dispatched here alongside Jun Kandel and several other fellow wizards.

“......It's changed a lot.”

A quiet murmur of wonder escaped Ezell's lips like a puff of white breath.

The Hermes she remembered had been nothing more than a southern backwater. But the investment of Maximilian and the Ebenholtz Family, together with the presence of 'Aternum', the munitions factory that had filled the void left by Gigantes, had transformed this frontier town completely.

“There's something fascinating about the atmosphere here.”

The other wizards' eyes shone too as they took in the scenery.

Rustle— rustle—

Since snow rarely settled thick over the south, the city's charm glittered all the more remarkably.

Beyond the snow that had been neatly cleared to one side stood boulevards laid out as straight as if measured with a ruler, lined with tidy shops. From the restaurants, bakeries, and cafés tucked here and there, the lively warmth of everyday life seemed to shimmer.

Children laughed brightly, clutching the toys their parents had bought them, and from the taverns drifted the sound of countless voices in laughter.

And yet, beneath that surface, a strangely suffocating sense of 'control' coexisted with it all.

A slight shift of the gaze, and the city's scenery turned bleak in an instant.

In southern Hermes, new regular army units had been garrisoned on a massive scale. As a result, walking the streets, they often came across heavily armed soldiers─who, of course, saluted them as wizards─patrolling around the clock with savage war hounds.

It was all because the whole of Hermes had been designated a Special Military Zone.

Indeed, unless one was a pure-blooded Aran, it was now impossible even to set foot in this city.

“Hm. What's with all these dogs roaming the streets?”

A noble among nobles, Jun Kandel knit his brows sharply in displeasure and clicked his tongue.

Just then, the army Major serving as their guide pointed to a building up ahead.

“We've arrived.”

Ezell, Jun, and the rest of the wizards came to a stop before their destination, the Aternum 3rd Maintenance Bay.

This was the reason they had been dispatched here.

Shells and cannonballs were, as a rule, 'standardized magic', so verifying their combat efficiency and stability required the help of the Magic Tower's senior wizards.

They all stepped through Aternum's iron gates.

“Ah, you've arrived. Welcome.”

The Chief Engineer and the researchers in white coats greeted them warmly. Her fellow wizards approached with familiar ease and immediately fell into talk of the work at hand, but for some reason Ezell couldn't make her feet move.

“.......”

She stood rooted at one side of the laboratory. Looking over the shells strewn here and there, she sank into a brief reverie.

Where will these weapons end up one day? How many people will they kill? What in the world do the Empire and the Emperor even want.......

“Ezell Runsellot.”

At Jun Kandel's voice.

Ezell snapped back to herself, and Jun signaled to her with his eyes.

“Come in.”

“......Yes, Professor.”

Setting her tangled thoughts aside for the moment and forcing them out from her mind, she followed after him.

Rustle— rustle—

Heavy snow was falling over the front garden of the mansion.

“Winter really is the best.”

Freya said it on a puff of white breath. She lay sprawled at an angle across the rocking chair in the garden, letting the cold-falling snowflakes settle over her, looking for all the world as if she meant to take a nap.

“What about you?”

“......I haven't the leisure to enjoy the charms of the season.”

“Oh-ho?”

At my answer, Freya let out a snort of laughter.

“To me, the seasons mean nothing more than that time is passing.”

“Bullshit. Like you're the only one who's busy?”

For now, this was nothing more than a rest before my next move.

In this period of internal crackdown just before the war broke out, the Revolutionary forces couldn't afford a single rash move, and Ezenheim, too, was sure to lie low, quiet as a mouse.

Still, as for me, I had plenty to do.

The things that came to mind at the word winter.

First, the 'cold'.

The Empire's subjects dreaded the winter. But this year, too, Lorenzo Academy's Mana Stone Heaters would be distributed free of charge.

After the cold came the name of a certain small country.

'Finnomia.'

Before my Regression, during the Continental War, the Empire had not had a single nation worthy of being called an ally. Its diplomacy itself had been that vicious.

But not this time. So long as a nation handed over its Ezenheim, or had very few Ezenheim to begin with, it could readily become an ally of the Empire.

I rose to my feet.

“Off somewhere again?”

Freya asked through half-lidded eyes. Today was supposed to be a swordsmanship lesson, no doubt about it.

But lately she hadn't been teaching me a single form or technique. She only harped, relentlessly, on meditation, meditation, and more meditation.

“I have a business trip. Military instruction.”

A small, snow-white country called Finnomia had been the first to ask the Empire to send military instructors.

The butterfly effect of the weaker nations that had watched the Valkania-Mekerel War.

Finnomia was stronger in national power than Mekerel, but it sat in the barren north, and its population was small to boot.

The Empire's ministers, naturally, had no idea where Finnomia even was and meant to refuse, but I stepped in myself and secured the approval.

The name Ebenholt‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌z was convenient in just this way.

Any innovation or revolution could be introduced with ease, and any diplomatic move could be pushed through without resistance.

“Have a safe trip, you brat.”

These days Freya was more interested in Leo than in me. At a light wave of her hand, Leo trotted over wagging his tail and sat down at her side.

Stroke. Stroke. Freya's hand ran gently over Leo's silver fur.

Rustle— rustle—

Leaving behind that winter scene of settling snowflakes, I set out from the mansion.

.......

During the Continental War, Finnomia had waged war against Robrus.

Robrus, which had signed a non-aggression pact with the Empire, wanted Finnomia's territory, and Finnomia, overwhelmed by Robrus's armored divisions and sheer weight of numbers, had easily lost half its land to occupation.

This time it had to be different. They had to drag things out as long as they could and hold their defensive lines.

Of course, the gap in national power between the two countries was immense.

But Robrus, at that time, had been far from perfect itself. Varmil's Great Purge had sent a great many capable generals to the chopping block, leaving the chain of command in shambles.

So if Finnomia could tie Robrus down by the ankles, the Empire's war effort would go far more smoothly.

That was the very reason I had taken the trouble to visit this frozen country in person.

“You must be weary after such a long journey.”

Finnomia's main force, the headquarters of the 1st Corps. Its Commander, Lieutenant General Hannu, received me with courtesy.

“Yes. A pleasure to meet you, Lieutenant General Hannu.”

I answered not in the Imperial Language, but in the language of Finnomia. Hannu's expression brightened visibly.

“Oh. You can speak Nomia as well, Sir?”

“I'm still clumsy with it.”

Finnomia's language, 'Nomia', shared its roots with no other language on the continent, which made it terribly difficult.

Even borrowing my Virus's gift for language acquisition, it had taken no small amount of effort.

“Remarkable. I had heard your talent for languages was extraordinary, Sir, but.......”

“It's nothing. Ah, our Imperial Army officers will likely arrive by train tomorrow.”

The purpose of this trip was military instruction. To temper Finnomia's army with the Empire's advanced systems.

“Yes. Allow me to show you this way.”

I followed Lieutenant General Hannu out onto the parade ground. Finnomian soldiers of various ranks, Majors, Captains, Sergeants, and the rest, all snapped to attention in a crisp, unified salute.

“Compared to the Imperial Army, I'm afraid they're humble and shabby.”

“Not at all. One look at the soldiers' eyes is enough to feel that these are highly trained elites. I can glimpse Marshal Wirse's command philosophy in them.”

“......You know the Marshal well?”

At my words, Lieutenant Genera‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌l Hannu's expression shifted strangely.

Before my Regression, the Empire's diplomats had always made the same mistake. They were forever busy trumpeting the Empire's superiority and belittling the other party.

Had they deluded themselves into thinking that only this would keep the Empire's prestige upright?

“The hero who wrested independence from the clutches of Robrus, there in the east. I've read of him in many books and records.”

But I thought the opposite. To acknowledge a weaker nation's culture and its heroes became, in itself, a tremendous source of pride for them. For diplomacy, too, in the end, began with the goodwill between people.

......An excerpt from「The Empire's Diplomatic Failures」, a book written by a Republic diplomacy expert.

“Marshal Wirse is a man deeply worthy of respect.”

Wirse Matheus Mansner.

Even after the Continental War ended, he was the hero and the shield of his people who, against all odds, kept the weak little nation of Finnomia an independent state to the very end. A man far greater than I had been before my Regression.

“......I see. It is an honor.”

Together with Lieutenant General Hannu, who was struggling to hide his delight, I strolled among the ranks of the assembled soldiers. As I did, I noticed a rather unusual piece of equipment.

“Skis.”

“Ah. Yes.”

Lieutenant General Hannu answered with an awkward smile.

“Quite a few of the soldiers get around on skis. Our country's terrain is so rugged and gets so much snow that horses and vehicles aren't easy to use, you see.”

I picked up one of the ski plates. Running my hand over its smooth surface, I broached the subject obliquely.

“I've heard Finnomia even has a special unit armed with nothing but skis.”

“......It isn't a unit armed with skis, exactly. We only field them on a small scale, as scouts or skirmishers.”

A faint note of displeasure crept into Lieutenant General Hannu's tone.

To link a proper regular army with skis, a winter pastime, seemed to strike him as an affront to the standing of his nation and its military.

And so it was that Finnomia had grasped the power these skis held far too late.

“Lieutenant General Hannu. I pursue a military system suited to a country's terrain and its overall environment. The approach best suited to Finnomia's geography, I mean.”

Before my Regression, the reason they had been crushed by Robrus owed something to the enemy's armored assault, but above all it was that they had failed to make full use of their own advantages.

I held the skis out to the Lieutenant General.

“In that sense, a Ski Special Forces....... it strikes me as very promising.”

In truth, Finnomia already had a ski unit. But the military's top brass never put them forward as a main force.

A last resort, wrung out mid-war out of sheer necessity, for they had no money, too few armored vehicles, and not even enough manpower. With no budget to buy military transport, they had strapp‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ed skis to their soldiers' feet and shoved them out to plug the front lines....... a small-scale, guerrilla-level formation.

That unit proved far more devastating than anyone had expected, and so they had managed, at the very least, to avoid being fully annexed by Robrus.

“This country has no shortage of rugged mountain ranges where the snow doesn't melt even in summer, does it.”

The winters were so bitterly cold that the very Mana in the air had taken on the chill. As a result, any region with even slightly higher Mana density was packed with snow and ice in the dead of summer.

“.......”

Still unable to grasp my intent, the Lieutenant General wore a displeased expression.

“Well, the deeper discussion of these special tactics, let's save that for later, with the command staff.”

The jutting, pouted lips of hidebound commanders were always such a trial. To shut them, the trick was to feed them a taste of meat first, rather than to argue.

“And, there's a gift I've brought along.”

“......A gift, you say?”

“Yes. It should rea‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌ch the unit by tomorrow morning. For today.......”

By the time I had arrived it was already night, and the Finnomian soldiers were still lined up at attention on the parade ground.

They'll freeze to death out there.

“Let's call it a night.”

* * *

Late at night.

Lieutenant General Hannu of the 1st Corps opened a line of communication with Marshal Wirse.

“Yes, Marshal. The knight Maximilian has arrived.”

As recently as fifty years ago, Finnomia had been a nation under the rule of Robrus.

But then came the [Red Revolution] that erupted within Robrus. Seizing on the chaos of the period when Premier Varmil took hold of power, Finnomia had barely managed to wrest its independence.

Because of that, Robrus glared with hungry, ever-watchful eyes, waiting for its chance to swallow Finnomia whole, and Finnomia in turn stayed wary of their ambitions. Just as Valkania had invaded Mekerel, there was no telling when that ominous history might repeat itself here.

“Curiously enough, he speaks Nomia fluently.”

The most basic, and yet the most difficult, form of respect.

─......Is that so. Just as I'd heard.

“Yes. He expressed his respect for you as well, Marshal.”

─Hm.

A short, low groan from Marshal Wirse came through the receiver.

It was true that the Empire had shown them goodwill and had backed Mekerel, but the Empire was a hegemon every bit as fearsome and greedy as Robrus. Which was to say it must never be wholly trusted.

“That said, there was something about him I found a little hard to understand.”

─In what regard?

“He gave me a piece of advice, something about fully expanding and establishing a ski unit.”

─.......

“Our terrain is snow-covered and harsh, true, but skis are a limited means, usable only in certain areas, in winter or in the perpetual snowfields of summer.”

Lieutenant General Hannu grumbled, sounding dissatisfied. But Marshal Wirse fell silent, as though lost in thought for a moment.

─Maximilian. He is among the highest nobility of the Empire.

Then, in that distinctively grand, resonant voice of his, he spoke of Maximilian.

─ A noble among nobles. Many call him a true aristocrat. A noble like that never misspeaks, never lets a meaningless word slip out without thought. Every word and deed of his carries some earnest meaning behind it.

In fact, Marshal Wirse himself was a descendant of the Mansner Marquis Family, Finnomia's highest noble house. He therefore held deeply aristocratic values, and toward Maximilian, whose outlook struck him as faintly similar to his own, he had already, in secret, come to feel a certain measure of goodwill.

─Always think more deeply on whatever that knight says. He is not a man to slight or look down on another nation.

“......Yes. I'll bear it in mind.”

─Carry on.

Click.

“.......”

Hannu wordlessly scratched the back of his neck, and in the meantime, before he knew it, dawn had begun to break.

Beep-beep-beep—!

All at once, a direct radio call came through.

He snatched up the radio.

“What is it?”

─Lieutenant General Hannu. At the checkpoint, cargo trucks have arrived, said to be a gift sent by the Imperial knight.

It was the rather urgent voice of the checkpoint on the Corps' outer perimeter.

“......A gift?”

The words Maximilian had spoken came suddenly to mind.

'There's a gift I've brought along. It should reach the unit by tomorrow morning.......'

Lieutenant General Hannu hesitated a moment, then gave the order to 'let it into headquarters'. After that, he came out to the parade ground himself and waited for the gift.

“What kind of gift is this supposed to be.......”

Just as he jutted his lips pointlessly against the biting dawn wind.

Rrrumble—

Far off, a procession of trucks approached, kicking up a blizzard of snow. Enormous shapes rolled in through the headquarters parade ground.

“......!”

Watching dumbly, Hannu's eyes went wide. The hairs on his head stood on end, and the lips he'd been pouting drew back in without his noticing.

At the sight of the 'equipment' slowly revealing itself, the soldier in him began to salivate.

“......H-hey! You there! Wake up those guys inside and get them all out here!”

He hurriedly sent soldiers to summon every last one o‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌f the officers.
